Estas neuronas son cruciales para el movimiento voluntario y su degeneraci&oacute;n conduce a una debilidad muscular progresiva y eventualmente a la par&aacute;lisis total, extendi&eacute;ndose de unas regiones a otras. La desaparici&oacute;n de las neuronas motoras tiene como consecuencia la neurodegeneraci&oacute;n y la atrofia muscular. La enfermedad puede aparecer tambi&eacute;n como debilidad de los m&uacute;sculos respiratorios.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La Dra. Guill&eacute;n, neur&oacute;loga del hospital HLA San Carlos, destaca la importancia de que el paciente y su entorno dispongan de los cuidados necesarios para mantener la mejor calidad de vida posible. &ldquo;Para ello es fundamental el diagn&oacute;stico precoz. Todo paciente diagnosticado con ELA tiene que ser tratado por un equipo multidisciplinar especializado y que tenga una estrecha colaboraci&oacute;n con los recursos asistenciales&rdquo;, explica.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hasta el momento no existe una prueba espec&iacute;fica para detectar esta enfermedad. Su diagn&oacute;stico se basa en la cl&iacute;nica, estudio neurofisiol&oacute;gico y exclusi&oacute;n de otras enfermedades. En cuanto al tratamiento, esta enfermedad no tiene cura, aunque existen tratamientos farmacol&oacute;gicos y otras terapias multidisciplinarias como pueden ser la fisioterapia, la terapia del habla o de la afectaci&oacute;n respiratoria&rdquo;, a&ntilde;ade la Dra. Guill&eacute;n.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Los pacientes diagnosticados con ELA, as&iacute; como sus familiares y cuidadores requieren atenci&oacute;n y orientaci&oacute;n espec&iacute;fica para manejar los desaf&iacute;os f&iacute;sicos, emocionales y pr&aacute;cticos que acompa&ntilde;an diariamente a esta enfermedad. Para ello la Dra. Guill&eacute;n recomienda, &ldquo;la adhesi&oacute;n a grupos de apoyo, ya que estos grupos permiten que los familiares se sientan acompa&ntilde;ados y comprendan mejor la enfermedad. Consultar con un terapeuta especializado en enfermedades cr&oacute;nicas puede ayudar a manejar el estr&eacute;s, la ansiedad y la depresi&oacute;n.
